KRIS BERRY, NOW, VISUAL ALBUM

Kris Berry’s new album encapsulates a piece of the present, of the things that lay bare in front of us, exposed and vulnerable, open to feeling it all, from sharp ache to profound love.

Staying true to that idea, I wanted to create a visual album that would explore all of the expressions of love, all the different kinds. Purposefully turning away from the customary rules of the music video medium, we embraced the slow passage of time and its mundanity, capturing small moments through a succession of ten “tableaux”, each embodying one way love can be manifested.

KIND OF LOVE

The track “Kind of Love” acts as the pinnacle piece, where the grand visual puzzle comes together, showing all the different expressions of love alongside each other, the way they find to express themselves and how they contradict or complete each other. Each, as complex as they are effortless and as dark as they are pure.

Episode nine, One of the Boys — Flesh

The ninth "tableau" of Kris Berry's album called N.O.W is a visualisation of "flesh", a fusion of distorted male bodies through movement and dance which turns them into one entity, a mass. Together, they become the embodiment of “Flesh”.

Episode eight, All About You— Muscle

Episode seven , TV — Heart

This film is the 7th episode of the visual album "NOW". Richard, the artist's father, feels comfort from the background noise of the TV. The set is on at all times, adjusted on "TeleCuraçao" for programs in Papiamento. A powerful presence it the household, the object tames with its glow all of Richard's feelings of nostalgia and longing for his home island and becomes a living partner in its own right.

Episode six, Mind in My Hat — Fuel

This film is the 6th episode of the project and showcases the artist's father, Richard, as he cooks "piska ku funhi" a traditional Curaçaoan dish. Richard is a man of many words for the world, but of few for his family. Cooking for his daughter is the way he found to try and express all the things he would want to say; because sometimes, words are too hard and not enough.

Episode four, Right Here Right Now — Blood

For this fourth sequence, I wanted to intimately capture the non verbal communication between a father and his child and how each moment spent together participates in growing that language together.

Episode three , Back to Shore — Spirit

This third “tableau” was all about manifesting the “spirit” element. An anthem for sisterhood, throughout generations, and the tales they’d tell, if only we’d start listening.

Episode one , First Time — Matter

The album opener: “First Time”, acts as the first layer of a giant fresco, when, still searching and observing, the artist draws the first graphite strokes and lays the skeleton.
